An elderly man and a two-year-old girl were killed in two separate road accidents due to reckless driving. The incidents led to agitation and road blocks in the respective areas.

An elderly man was crushed by a speeding vehicle while crossing the road early in the morning at Kestopur, under Baguiati police station. This led to uproar amongst the Kestopur residents. Locals surrounded the police and the local councillor in protest. It has been reported that the elderly man, Pradip Roy (66), was a resident of the Samar Palli area in Kestopur. Sources revealed that on Wednesday morning, he had left home to visit a doctor when, while crossing the road in the area, a speeding truck ran over him. Locals erupted in anger. Police and the local councillor rushed to the scene, but angry residents surrounded them in protest. Traffic was disrupted. The man was rushed to the hospital, where doctors declared him dead.

Meanwhile, the situation at the accident site remained tense with outraged locals protesting. It was only after the police’s assurance that the situation was brought under control.

In another incident, a two-year-old girl was killed after being crushed by a reckless bus, while her father was critically injured. The incident occurred last night in the Dharmapur Das Para area under Gaighata police station in North 24-Parganas. The name of the deceased child has not been revealed. According to police sources, Bappa Debnath, a resident of Ashoknagar Banbania, was riding a bike with his two-year-old daughter, heading from Gaighata towards Habra. The accident occurred in the Dharmapur Das Para area when the bus wheels ran over the child, resulting in her death. Bappa was critically injured and rushed to Habra hospital. Locals claim that a DN 44 route bus on the Bongaon-Dakshineswar route was being driven recklessly, leading to the accident. In response, locals blocked Jessore Road for some time. They stated that the narrow road, coupled with reckless driving and competitive racing among buses, often led to accidents. Upon receiving the news, the Gaighata police arrived at the scene and sent the child’s body to Bongaon Sub-Division Hospital for post-mortem. The blockade was lifted after police intervention. The offending bus and its driver have been detained.
